Close on the heels of our collaboration for our PillowTalk line of fine art & home decor, Joseph and I began to “reinvent the alphabet.”
Sticking to a 4″ x 4″ format, we began to sketch each letter in a repeat pattern to fill in the square. We had the vision early on to create a larger square poster of the individual letters so we were conscious of using lots of colors in lots of combinations: markers, gel pens, colored pencils, paint pens, graphite, and ballpoints were our tools. The more interesting, wild and unique we could envision the better. Thus you see the culmination of a long time spent with this very out of the box ABC’s.
We worked on some together, and some alone. We made sure that as we got midway through the project, that we had upper case, lower case, script, block and every form of repeat pattern we could think of represented.
The final poster was a challenge as the 26 letters of the alphabet do not come together as a square without the addition of 10 other squares. So we played around with colors and used colored pencil, marker, and paint pen to create about 20 different colors we thought would compliment the individual letter images.
The creation of the poster was like putting a jigsaw puzzle together. We were constantly moving the ABC’s and the solid colors around to create the balanced design you see here.
The poster would be a great addition to a child’s room. The individual letter images look great on their own or framed to spell out a word or name. Solid colors are available as special order as are the images printed on canvas for framing or to sew into pillows.
